SJ Superson Sakura Studios Paintings & Collage
My work represents my way of re-balancing myself and reconnecting with nature. A passion for ancient Asian art led to an impressionistic approach to form and color with black or green brush strokes that are reminiscent of the ink of calligraphy. I often use a dry brush to mix and layer colors directly on the canvas. As time goes on, I have become more playful and less of a perfectionist. My whimsical side is often revealed in many of my mixed media pieces. What I hope emerges in all my work is a landscape of my spirit and an invitation to join me there.
As an only child I became an expert in solitude. My best friend and the subject of my first painting was my dog Trinket, done when I was 11. We spent much of our time exploring forests and sea sides. I believe this fascination for nature, not as it is merely seen, but felt, is the genesis for the work I create today.
Throughout my career, I have learned to make mistakes with humor and grace and to know that mistakes often become our most fascinating works. I often create an added element of whimsy that is uniquely my own.
My advice to other artists is “Go forward, rejoicing.”
